DeltaV Student Spotlight: Ethan Titler

From a friendly smile in every aisle to a friendly face behind Aisles Online

When Ethan Titler started to learn to code with DeltaV Code School, he was a part time server at Hy-Vee’s Market Grille, but he already knew where he wanted to work after graduation. He wanted to stay at Hy-Vee.

Ethan graduated from DeltaV in October 2018 after 20 weeks of intensive instruction. Less than a year later, he joined us for a Q&A about how his life has changed since completing Iowa’s premier code school.

What made you decide to learn to code with DeltaV?
“I was at a point in my life personally where I questioned my direction. I had a part-time job at the Coralville Hy-Vee as a server at the Market Grille. When I heard about DeltaV from a friend, including his salary post-graduation, I was skeptical but gave it a try and ended up loving it. Each time I completed a course, I told myself that I would evaluate whether or not to do the next one. In truth, I was hooked from the start.”

Why did you want to work at Hy-Vee after graduating?
“Having worked for Hy-Vee for years, I knew that it was a company that takes care of its employees, but more importantly, takes care of its communities, which was super important to me. To be able to work at a company that has a positive influence on people’s daily lives is the dream.”

What’s the most notable difference working at Hy-Vee before and after DeltaV?
“Hy-Vee culture hasn’t changed very much to be honest. It’s always been about helping customers. The biggest difference now is that instead of working face-to-face with the customers at the Market Grille, I am helping thousands of customers have a better experience at Aisles Online.”

How has your life changed since graduating from DeltaV?
“DeltaV gave me the tools to go from a part-time job to a career. In a way, it set me off on a path that has nothing but increased my work, morale, financial stability, and my quality of life. DeltaV really opened up doors that I didn’t even know were there.”

Who would you recommend DeltaV classes to?
“It sounds cliche but everyone. IT is something I never really thought I would have been doing professionally a year and a half ago. I believe that going out and trying the DeltaV Code 101 and 102 courses really opened myself up to this field. You don’t know if it will be a fit unless you try. DeltaV is a good place to take that first step.”

What advice would you give to students starting DeltaV?
“There are several things I wish I was told going through the program. Starting out, I would have told myself to be confident, it is going to be hard work, but anyone can do it.  Ask questions: the IT community and DeltaV is super supportive if you admit that something isn’t clicking. And one thing I personally struggled with doing was the reflections. Everyone has their own learning styles. It is important to know what works for you and to give feedback if something needs to be changed.”

After 20 weeks of instruction at DeltaV Code School, Ethan Titler went from being a part-time server at the Coralville Hy-Vee Market Grille to a Software Engineer I at the Hy-Vee Helpful Smiles Technology Center in Grimes, Iowa.
