[vc_row padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px”][vc_column fade_animation_offset=”45px” width=”1/1″][text_output]December 6, 2017, Des Moines, IA – Des Moines East High School, in partnership with NewBoCo, will host business representatives, state officials, and school administrators during an Hour of Code event on December 8, closing out Computer Science Education week.
East High School math and computer science teacher Tim Walljasper is participating in NewBoCo’s 2017-18 Code.org Professional Learning Program and is proud to share his successes this year.
“We are in our second year offering AP Computer Science Principles here at East, and I am happy to share participation has doubled over year one to nearly 60 students enrolled. It has been an amazing experience watching students gain confidence and get excited about the work they are creating,” he shared.
Event attendees will hear a welcome from Sean Johnson, Associated Computer System VP of Operations, and Principal’s Antoinette Stevens. Students will demonstrate their projects and invite attendees to learn how to code with them.
“This is a great way for decision makers outside of the classroom to see what students are capable of, and for students to hear how skills strengthened through computer science are valuable in any field,” NewBoCo’s K-12 Education Coordinator Samantha Dahlby said.

The Code.org Professional Learning Program is a year long training that is free for middle school and high school teachers. The high quality program starts with a full week in the summer, followed by quarterly workshops during the academic year to support teachers as they implement their curriculum and build a community of support amongst the computer science teachers in Iowa.
