Since 2017, NewBoCo has recognized teachers' pivotal role in student success, espeically when it comes to computer science education.
In the last eight years over 2,200 educators have participated in a NewBoCo professional development program, bringing computer science to more than 100,000 K-12 students across Iowa. The latest partnership with Code.org, NewBoCo has introduced four virtual training CS modules designed for 5th-9th grade teachers nationwide to support educators further.
These interactive sessions cover:
- Interactive Animations & Games: Guiding students through creating digital projects using block-based coding and visual programming tools.
- AI and Machine Learning: Introducing fundamental concepts through hands-on activities, such as recommendation algorithms and image recognition.
- Code.org + Science: Integrating CS concepts into other subjects, including science, by modeling ecosystems and physical systems.
- Focus on Data: Empowering students to use data for problem-solving, integrating CS with mathematics.
These modules provide educators with the knowledge to deliver engaging, hands-on CS activities, fostering a deeper understanding among students.
“Education is continuing to evolve, and NewBoCo continues to meet educators where they are in that evolution,” says NewBoCo’s Director of Education, Samantha Dahlby. “Code.org has been instrumental in us working to offer flexible modules that can be taken individually or as a series so that more teachers can engage students in subjects like math, science, and language arts in new ways.”
Student Success Stories
The impact of NewBoCo’s initiatives is evident in student achievements. For instance, four students from Norwalk High School were named Computer Science Ambassadors after their teacher participated in NewBoCo’s training. These students have become advocates for CS education, inspiring their peers and contributing to a culture of innovation within their school.
