CoderDojo with Iowa Flood Center

NewBoCo’s CoderDojo program offers free STEM exploration opportunities for K-5 students in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and the surrounding areas. Rotating stations include topics such as game design, animation, robotics, engineering, electronics, and coding. New subjects are regularly added, keeping the programming dynamic and engaging for returning participants. Learn more about CoderDojo.

This Session’s Special Guest: Iowa Flood Center

The Iowa Flood Center (IFC) puts science-based information and technology in the hands of Iowa’s decision-makers, emergency responders, community leaders, home and business owners, educators, and the public. IFC researchers, staff, and students strive to develop the most innovative tools and reliable information to improve Iowa’s flood preparedness and resiliency.

Important Notes:

  • We have found a permanent home! Our new education space is located in the east end of Lindale Mall, next to Dick’s House of Sport. It’s the corner store space across from the play area.
  • Space is often limited. RSVPs are strongly encouraged to secure your child’s spot.
  • Parent/guardian supervision is required for all sessions.

About CoderDojo

CoderDojo is a free program for kids from kindergarten to 5th grade.

Children can freely explore any STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) themed stations, with mentors available to help them get started, allowing your child to learn and explore on their own.

Popular, hands-on stations include activities like:

  • Hour of Code: Engage in self-guided activities tailored to your coding comfort level. Activities include Scratch Block Programming, live coding strategy games, and more.
  • Turing Tumble: a logic puzzle where students work to solve problems using levers and marbles. 
  • Snap Circuits: Learn basic engineering, electronics, and circuitry concepts using easy-to-connect components.
  • Microscopes: Kids can explore biology up close with a self-guided microscope with over 200 slides.
  • Drones: Kids can maneuver drones (with adult supervision) around obstacle courses.
