NewBoCo launches Iowa’s first adult code school
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, November 7, 2016 – NewBoCo, the parent organization of several programs that focus on education and innovation in the Creative Corridor, announced the launch of a new program designed to provide world-class software development training to the regional workforce.
The program, called DeltaV, will provide a comprehensive coding curriculum, powered by Code Fellows – a renowned coding bootcamp based in Seattle, WA. The program provides four levels of courses, from entry level courses for students with little or no coding experience to advanced courses to get students job-ready for software development careers.
DeltaV will begin taking students in December of 2016. The 101 level is a one-day session that introduces students to coding and gives them an idea of the rigor of the class. The intermediate 201 and 301 levels are four week, full-time courses; the advanced 401 level is ten weeks, full-time. The classes are highly condensed and focus on the modern software development skills and practices in high demand in Eastern Iowa.
“The DeltaV format requires a full-time commitment – eight or more hours per day – in order to rapidly grow technical skills as quickly as possible,” Senior Software Instructor Keith Dahlby said. “The labs and projects are collaborative, hands-on experiences representative of real-world software development.”
The program fills a need in workforce development in the State of Iowa, as no existing program teaches development and programming with the focus and intensity of the Code Fellows curriculum. Employers are currently either sending their workforce out of state for advanced technical training or recruiting experienced employees from outside the state. DeltaV offers a curriculum that is much more condensed than traditional computer science degrees and certifications at secondary education institutions in the state, with a specific focus on critical practical skills like Agile and test-driven development. This program can provide the training to begin a career in coding, assist established professionals in transitioning to a new career, or fill educational gaps for existing programmers in the region.
“As employers, we often either invest heavily in out-of-state classes for current employees, or we go to the coasts and drag recruits to Iowa by their hair and hope they stay,” Executive Director of NewBoCo Eric Engelmann said. “With DeltaV code school, we will develop our own talent and increase the employability and prosperity of people right here in Iowa, while making our state more competitive.”
Registration for initial classes (levels 101 & 201) will open the week of November 14; more information can be found at newbo.co/deltav-code-school.
