Cedar Rapids, IA, October 20, 2017 – On Friday, October 27, DeltaV Code School, Iowa’s first adult code school, will graduate its first class of Code 401 students.

“It doesn’t feel real yet,” DeltaV Instructor Keith Dahlby said. “At this point I’m just anxious to get them out in the real world and see what they do.”

Three students will be the first in the state to complete 20 weeks of coding courses, learning multiple modern development languages.

“I had a proud developer dad moment earlier this week when we were having a discussion in class,” Dahlby said. “I paused to consider that this conversation wouldn’t have made sense to any of the students just 10 weeks ago. They still have a ways to go, but they’ve come so far. It’s more vivid seeing this change happen in 10-20 weeks instead of over a few years.”

Most students start the DeltaV program with little to no coding or software experience.

“This will be my first technical job,” DeltaV student Dustin Yelland said. “I’ve only done retail or construction – I’ve never had an office job. DeltaV has prepared me with technical skills, so I can focus on learning and adjusting to an office environment when I get a job.”

Two of the students, Benjamin Beeksma and Jason Logan, will be sharing their DeltaV experiences at Iowa Code Camp on November 4 in their session titled “Couch to Code”.

“Being the first class coming into DeltaV, I didn’t really know what to expect,” Beeksma said. “I really saw it as an opportunity to make myself more marketable, but I’m astounded how much I’ve been able to absorb and learn. I think that it’s important to share our stories because DeltaV is an opportunity that other people might miss out on if they don’t understand what’s possible.”

The DeltaV students will present their final group project to complete their 401 course followed by a graduation ceremony from the DeltaV program.
