Cedar Rapids, IA, January 31, 2017 – The Cedar Rapids / Iowa City 1 Million Cups will feature eight women presenters for Female Founders in February.
“I’ve walked into networking events and pitch competitions and other startup events and been the only female or the women would be outnumbered 10 to 1,” 1 Million Cups co-organizer Jessalyn Holdcraft said. “That’s why I was determined to feature a month of female founders; it makes our entrepreneurial ecosystem more accessible to half of the population.”
The featured female founders have businesses and events across the Corridor including a fashion show, delectable dumplings, the state’s largest gathering of entrepreneurs, and a local-focused wedding registry.

For Founding Editor of Be Leaderly Jo Miller, this month is perfectly aligned with the personal and professional mission.
“For the past 16 years, it has been my personal mission and passion to help emerging women leaders advance their careers and take on positions of influence in business,” Miller said. “That’s why events like this one that highlights the successes and contributions of women business owners are so important.”
“If all of the women-owned businesses in the U.S. formed a new country, its GDP would be ranked fifth in the world. But despite an economic impact of $3 trillion annually, we face a steeper climb to success due to the lack of female role models, mentors, and investors.”
In addition to Female Founders in February, other themed 1 Million Cups months have included Artists in April, University of Iowa John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC) teams in June and July, and Sustainability in November.
