SUMMARY:CoderDojo with Matthew 25
DESCRIPTION:CoderDojo is a free program for kids from kindergarten to 5th grade.\n\nChildren can freely explore any STEM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, & Mathematics) themed stations\, with mentors available to help them get started\, allowing your child to learn and explore on their own. \nMatthew 25 Urban Farm and Education \nKendal of Matthew 25’s Urban Farm and Education programming will guide students on creating seed bombs. Seed bombs are spherical objects made of dirt and seeds that can be thrown onto land to grow vegetation. Students will be encouraged to take the seed bombs with them to plant somewhere in the community. We will also encourage them to document where they planted them so we can create a digital map to track the seeds progress throughout the year. \nHands-On Stations:\n\nHour of Code: Engage in self-guided activities tailored to your coding comfort level. Activities include Scratch Block Programming\, which allows you to easily build stories and games using “blocks” of code. You can also play Codecombat\, an innovative live coding strategy game for beginners. Learn Python or JavaScript as you defeat ogres\, solve mazes\, and level up.\nTuring Tumble: a logic puzzle where students work to solve problems using levers and marbles. It helps kids understand computer science concepts without computers! Create your own designs or work through the ‘challenge’ booklet for a little more structure to the play\nSnap Circuits: Learn basic engineering\, electronics\, and circuitry concepts using Snap Circuits! Snap Circuits use easy-to-connect components to assemble electronic circuits on a simple “rows-and-columns” base grid that you build functions like the printed circuit boards in most electronic products.\nMicroscopes: Kids can explore biology up close with a self-guided microscope with over 200 slides.\nDrones: Kids can maneuver drones (with adult supervision) around obstacle courses.\n\n  \nIf you will need disability-related accommodations in order to participate in this event\, please contact Community Programs Manager Melissa Silver at 319-214-5646 or melissa@newbo.co. Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time to meet your access needs. \nPrograms like this happen because of sponsorships and generous donations from YOU\, thank you! \nDonate to support K12 STEM Education \n  \nPlease register for this event\, so we can adequately prepare! \n  \nShare with a friend or colleague:

SUMMARY:1 Million Cups Cedar Rapids: Randori Life
DESCRIPTION:This Week:\nRandori Life was founded by Greg Happel on the belief that personal growth shouldn’t feel like running on a treadmill to nowhere. Too often\, traditional self-improvement methods overlook the diversity of how our brains work—focusing on rigid routines and one-size-fits-all solutions that lead to burnout rather than balance. \nDrawing inspiration from martial arts philosophy and the principles of neurodiversity\, Randori Life helps individuals stop fighting themselves and start working with their own minds. Its approach shifts the focus from a “have to” mentality to a “want to” mindset\, offering practical training rooted in awareness\, discipline\, and purpose. Rather than prescribing quick fixes\, Randori Life teaches both what to do and why—empowering people to move through life with clarity\, confidence\, and self-compassion. https://randorilife.com/ \n\nProgram schedule\n\n8:45 to 9:00 – Coffee & Conversation\n9:00 to 9:45 – Official Program\n9:45 to 10:00 – Q&A\n\nIf you will need disability-related accommodations in order to participate in this event\, please contact Event Coordinator Jan@newbo.co . SUMMARY:Fun with Data!
DESCRIPTION:This professional learning workshop is part of our Interactive Games and Projects for High School Students series.\nEach workshop is comprised of two sessions presented virtually from 6-8pm. See all workshops by visiting the series page here. \nSession 1: Tuesday\, April 14\nUsing a data table from App Lab\, we will incorporate multiple lists to create a guessing game. For example\, using data about US States\, pull columns representing state names and images. We will choose a random image and have users identify the state. What fun! \nSession 2: Tuesday\, April 21\nIn this fun session\, we will attempt to teach App Lab how we are best motivated. Using generated lists of motivation quotes\, we will randomly select a quote and tell App Lab if we are motivated. Using that input\, our code will slowly learn and work to provide more similar quotes to those liked by the user. If time allows\, we will also learn how to store data in App Lab from use to use (meaning the training we provide will not reset each time we press run.) \n  \nAbout the Series\nInteractive Games and Projects for High School Students is a professional development course designed for high school educators teaching a general Computer Science course and/or Computer Science Principles.
